Geaduation ceremony for Duluth High School scheduled for 4 p.m. Thursday, May 23, at Gwinnett Center Arena.
Twenty-one graduation ceremonies will take place throughout Gwinnett County this week. Duluth High School will graduate 564 seniors including 120 honor graduates at 4 p.m. Thursday, May 23, at the Gwinnett Center Arena. John Kaffezakis is the valedictorian for Duluth High School, and Nolan Gregory Graham is salutatorian. John, the son of John and Becky Kaffezakis, plans to attend Georgia Tech on scholarship and major in radiological engineering. Nolan, the son of Greg and Jane Graham, plans to attend Oxford College of Emory University and Emory University on scholarship and major in neuroscience and behavioral biology. Duluth High School's Erica Millette will speak at the ceremony May 23.
Duluth High's Teacher of the Year is among those speaking at the graduation ceremony this week. Erica Millette was named the school's Teacher of the Year this year in September. She is a mathematics teacher at Duluth High and has also served as a soccer coach. Other speakers include: J. Alvin Wilbanks, superintendent; and Mary Kay Murphy, a long-time board member. J. Blair Sanders of Duluth and Katheryn Nikolich of Lawrenceville made history at Georgia Gwinnett College during the Friday (May 17) commencement ceremony when they received a double degree and double major. They were among 270 graduates at the Lawrenceville four-year liberal arts college's spring commencement. Sanders, 24, earned a bachelor’s of science in information technology,with a concentration in software development. She also received a bachelor’s of art in English with a concentration in writing and rhetoric. Nikolich, 52, earned two bachelor’s of art degrees, one in history with a western world concentration and the other in political science with an American government concentration. More than 270 students donned their caps and gowns Friday (May 17), as they graduated from Georgia Gwinnett College. It was a notable graduation for the young college in Lawrenceville for a number of reasons. GGC graduated their 1,000th student, welcomed their first double major and double degree graduates and their first Fulbright Scholar. The commencement was also the last for GGC's founding president Dr. Daniel Kaufman. He will step down at the end of June to become president of the Gwinnett Chamber of Commerce. Gwinnett County Board of Education adopts $1.763 billion FY2014 budget and tentatively adopts 1.30 mills increase in tax millage rate.
After holding the line in the face of declining revenue in recent years, the Gwinnett County Board of Education anticipates having to raise the tax millage rate to fund the FY2014 budget. The school board adopted a FY2014 balanced budget totaling $1.76 billion, a decrease of $12.8 million or .7 percent from the FY2013 budget at its meeting Thursday (May 16) at the Instructional Support Center in Suwanee. The board also tentatively adopted an increase of 1.30 mills in the tax rate. Despite “a tremendous downturn in the economy we’ve been able to have the millage rate unchanged for some time,” Rick Cost, chief financial officer for Gwinnett County Public Schools, said. Boys play against each other at 7:30 p.m. Girls powderpuff football game at 5 p.m. precedes boys game.
Members of the Duluth High School Wildcats Team will play each other in the traditional spring game Friday, May 17, at 7:30 p.m. at Cecil Morris Field. A girls powderpuff football game at 5 p.m. will precede the boys game. Junior and senior girls will play sophomore and freshman girls. Admission is $5.
