Gwinnett Pools Open Saturday for Season

County officials have some tips for 'safe swimming' this summer.

Another prime summer activity -- swimming -- will be available to Gwinnett residents beginning this weekend. County officials have announced that Gwinnett public pools will open on Saturday, May 25. The county has several pools that are located around the area. Of course, there also are private pools, as well as swimming areas at Lake Lanier. So the county website has some tips for safe swimming, courtesy of Gwinnett Fire and Emergency Services. To find a Gwinnett pool near you, click here.

DHS Class of 2013 Graduates!

Along with their diplomas, Duluth High School graduates receives praise and advice during graduation ceremony.

About 564 Duluth High School seniors received their diplomas, praise, and advice during graduation Thursday (May 23) at the Gwinnett Center Arena. The ceremony was the fifty-fourth annual commencement exercise for DHS. Principal Anthony Smith recognized the class for its accomplishments. The Class of 2013 received more than $5 million in scholarships not including Hope scholarships, Smith said. The class included 125 honor graduates. “Eighty-five percent of you will enter post-secondary education, while 22 of you will begin service in our nation’s military.” In addition, seniors accumulated tens of thousands of service hours within the school and the community, Smith said. “This class has taken over 1,200 AP exams over the past four years…

'Epic' Visually Entertaining, But Story Line Skimpy

Overall, 'Epic' is still worthy of a family trip to the theaters, according to one movie critic.

When a teenage girl finds herself magically transported into this secret universe, she teams up with an elite band of warriors and a crew of comical, larger-than-life figures, to save their world...and ours. Here's what critics are saying: "Epic" is rated PG for mild action, some scary images and brief rude language. The movie runs 1 hour and 43 minutes. Suspect Charged in Bullying, Duluth Home Invasion

Officials said the suspect turned himself in, and that the victim was a 12-year-old boy.

A Duluth man has been arrested and charged in connection with a recent home invasion that involved a 12-year-old victim. Duluth Police charged Joshua Parrish, 19, with two felonies: false imprisonment and robbery. Jail records indicate that he lives in Duluth, and that he is being held at the Gwinnett County Detention Center without bond. Parrish apparently turned himself into police late Thursday night, according to WSB-TV. Parrish began bullying the 12-year-old victim when he got off his school bus, and then forced his way into the boy's Duluth home, WSB-TV reported earlier this week. Police say the boy's money and a computer were stolen in the process.
