Viewfinder: Pink Pirate Ball

Costumed guests have fun, raise funds to help breast cancer patients.

Pirates painted the night pink at the “Pink Pirate Ball” at the Northeast Atlanta Hilton.

Duluth resident Susan Oates organized the March 19 event for Paint Georgia Pink. Oates is the executive director of the nonprofit organization, which raises breast cancer awareness and funds.

Attendees tied on eye patches and donned full pirate garb accented with pink for a costume contest. Capt. Hook was spotted as well as Capt Jack Sparrow. The ladies got into the act with pink bustiers, wide black belts, scarves, and bold jewelry.

“I asked everyone to step out of reality and just have fun with the costumes,” said Oates. “I love seeing everyone in their costumes and getting into character, and, of course, I love seeing the dance floor full.”

The ballroom was packed to the brim with swashbucklers on the dance floor. The DJ played old favorites like “I Will Survive” and “Like a Virgin.” The disco lights flashed and conga lines formed.

The Passoff family helped keep the dance floor hopping. Randi Passoff, who lost her 15-year breast cancer battle in September 2010, founded Paint Georgia Pink to raise funds for underinsured and underserved women with breast cancer.

A silent auction included a Chipper Jones signed jersey and autographed baseballs among other items.

Paint Georgia Pink will sponsor the Randi Passoff Memorial Breast Cancer Walk Saturday, Sept. 17, at Centennial Olympic Park.
