Duluth Fall Festival a Month Away

Fifty committees and nearly 400 volunteers gear up for another successful festival Sept. 24-25.

The signs promoting this year's Duluth Fall Festival have been put up, and volunteers are finalizing details of the community's largest event. The Sept. 24-25 event on the Town Green and the city's downtown streets attracts 80,000 to 100,000 festival-goers.

Festivities at the 29th annual fall event include a parade, 400 arts, crafts, sponsor and food booths, live entertainment on the Festival Center Stage and the Gazebo, a 5K road race, and a children’s activity area. A carnival opens Sept. 21 and continues through the festival.

The festival is put on by nearly 50 committees and 400 volunteers and is supported by many local individuals and businesses. Sponsors and volunteers were recognized at a "Sizzlin' Summer Picnic" Aug. 6 at Wild Wally's Party Shack at the home of the late Wally Odum and his widow Ann Odum. Suzanna's Kitchen provided barbecue sandwiches and hot dogs for the hungry crowd.

Duluth Mayor Nancy Harris introduced Wayne Herman, chairman of the 2011 festival, and Mrs. Odum. Harris led a moment of silence for Odum and for Rita Jones Westbrook, two special people the community recently lost. Rita was represented at the picnic by her parents Bob and Francis Jones.

Other pre-festival events include a free concert by Rupert’s Orchestra on the Duluth Festival Stage Sept. 10 and the “Taste of Duluth” featuring fare from Duluth restaurants at the Payne-Corley House Sept. 15.
