'Sleeping Beauty' Awakens in Duluth

Play based on popular fairy tale opens Thursday, May 31, at New Dawn Theater in Duluth and continues through June 17.

New Dawn Theater Company presents a delightful production of “The Sleeping Beauty” May 31-June 17. Performances occur at 8 p.m. Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays with matinees at 2 p.m. Saturdays and Sundays.

Written by Charlotte Chorpenning, the play takes place in a castle long ago and far away. The evil “Frytania” is irked because she was not invited to Sleeping Beauty’s christening. She appears and imposes a curse on the princess. When Beauty is 16, she will prick her finger on a spinning wheel and die.

The king and queen are horrified. Her friends Ella, Gort and Norbert along with good fairies Una, Freona, Cordia, and Belita try to save Beauty from this dismal fate. But on her 16th birthday, the princess finds her way to a tower containing the only remaining spindle in the kingdom. Can Elano, the page who will become prince, do anything to stop Beauty’s impending death? Come to the play and see what happens.
