Duluth High School Weekly Sports Review

This is the first in a weekly roundup of Duluth High School athletics. The column features spring sports.

Starting today, DuluthPatch will begin a weekly roundup of Duluth High School athletics. We look forward to recognizing the accomplishments of the school's gifted young athletes, both male and female.

NORCROSS -- Because there are so many teams to cover, DuluthPatch will rely heavily on the coaches and/or boosters to email their results to billjohnson717@gmail.com The roundup will run every Sunday. Deadline to report results is noon Saturday.

BASEBALL

Norcross 1, Duluth 0

NORCROSS —Duluth ended the week losing a tough pitcher's duel on the road Friday. Norcross edged the Wildcats 1-0 in their Region 7-AAAAA opener to up their overall record to 4-4.

Chris Rich, who gave up only five hits in six innings, and the Blue Devils Joseph Wilber kept fans on the edge of their seats with their solid pitching performances. Wilber went the distance and scattered six hits to pick up the win.

Tanner Maloof went 2-for-2 and drove in the winning run which was scored by Neil Feifenberger.

Duluth 12, Mountain View 1

LAWRENCEVILLE — On Wednesday, the Duluth Wildcats baseball team went on the road and roughed up Mountain View 12-1 in a six-inning game to get the week off to a good start.

John Clark, who will play college ball at Georgia College in Millidgeville next season, and David Matton each belted home runs for Duluth

Zack Erwin (3-1) was the winning pitcher, going the distance while striking out five Mountain View batters.

Noah Hoback had a pair of hits and two RBI and Alex Raffensperger added two hits.

Alex Brock, Peyton Fore and losing pitcher Beau Blair each had a two hits for Mountain View.

GIRLS TENNIS

Mill Creek 4, Duluth 1

HOSCHTON — Duluth finished the week by taking on Region 7-AAAAA powerhouse Mill Creek Thursday and dropped a 4-1 decision.

Mill Creek improved to 11-1 on the season with singles wins by Michelle Yau and Mallory Colts and doubles victories by Nela Handac and Allison Weaver and Cailey Stevens and Lauren Atkinson.

Norcross 5, Duluth 0

DULUTH — The Lady Wildcats couldn't break through with a victory at home on Tuesday and suffered a 5-0 loss to arch rival Norcross in the Region 7-AAAAA opener.

The Lady Blue Devils Cameron Williams, Nicole Northrup, and Zooha Vellanki all claimed wins in singles matches as Norcross improved to 8-2 for the season and 1-0 in region play..

Cameryn Massey and Stacy Lackey won the No. 1 doubles matches, while Sarah Ann Gratwick and Maria Lackey handled the No. 2 doubles.

BOYS TENNIS

Mill Creek 4, Duluth 1

HOSCHTON — Matt Deviries gave the Wildcats their only win of the day in no. 2 singles as Duluth fell to Mill Creek 4-1 on Thursday. The Hawks (4-7, 2-0) got singles victories by Leemike Turner and Brad Akins to remain undefeated in Region 7-AAAAA. The Hawks doubles teams of Tucker Fleming and Josh Mallot and Travis Hanes and Zach Martinez also posted victories to secure the win.

Duluth 3, Norcross 2

DULUTH — Deviries and Ahbi Ramachandiran earned singles wins Tuesday and the doubles team of Deviries and Austin Lloyd was victorious, leading Duluth to a 3-2 win Wednesday.

Norcross' Chris Willis won his singles match and Andrev Deitsch and Sinclair Bunton gave the Blue Devils their only other win in a doubles match.

BOYS SOCCER

Collins Hill 4, Duluth 0

SUWANEE — Amiri Abraham.,Zak Wallingford Eli Carrasco and Nomis Cific scored goals for the Eagles en route to a 4-0 shutout win over the Wildcats Friday night.

Collins Hill remains unbeaten in Region 7-AAAAA play, improving to 4-0 and is now 8-1 overall.

GIRLS SOCCER

Collins Hill 1, Duluth 0

DULUTH — The Lady Wildcats had nine shots on goal Friday night, but couldn't get one past Collins Hill's alert goalkeeper Calli Star.

Starr's outstanding effort helped the preserve the Eagles’ 1-0 shutout and lift them to a 6-3 overall record and a 1-0 mark in region play.

Lindsay Leonardo assisted Karen Blackburn scored the game’s only goal off an assist by Lindsay Leonardo.

BOYS LACROSSE

Parkview 8, Duluth 6

DULUTH — Visiting Parkview held on for a two-goal win on the road against Duluth Thursday. Connor King had four goals for the Panthers (2-6), while Paul Vance added two goal. Rohan Mahadevia had 20 saves in goal.

GIRLS LACROSSE

Collins Hill 10, Duluth 6

SUWANEE — Duluth's Ajahna Grosvenor scored two goals and Noah Holt and Ali Cole one each, but it wasn't enough for the Lady Wildcats who dropped a 10-6 decision to host Collins Hill Friday.

Cole also had five ground balls, while keeper Paige Salkowski saved 15 shots.

Lauren Amisano led the Eagles with three goals and Darsey Walker and Michelle Vasques each scored two to pace the Eagles (5-3, 2-0).

Collins Hill keeper Eryn Bonds saved 14 shots Friday to help the Eagles hold off Duluth 10-6.
