Injury-Plagued Dululth Wildcats Have a Bye Week

Duluth Coach Corey Jarvis is not sure when, or if, his starting quarterback will return. Region 7-AAAAA's most feared passer Anfornee Stewart's injury has been diagnosed as a high ankle sprain. Recovery time could be 4-6 weeks.

After a difficult loss to Collins Hill Friday, Duluth football Coach Corey Jarvis said he was looking forward to the Wildcats open date next Friday.

"We need some time to regroup," Jarvis said Sunday afternoon. "The last three weeks have been very tough. I felt like we should have won the Alpharetta game. Then, we lost our starting quarterback last week and lost to Collins Hill Friday."

Duluth started the season 2-0, but the 'Cats lost starting quarterback Anfornee Stewart to an ankle injury in the Norcross game last week. They lost that game 35-14 then fell to Collins Hill 35-13 on Friday.

It is questionable as to whether Stewart will be able to return this season. Jarvis said the injury has been diagnosed as a high ankle sprain and bruised achilles. Recovery time for a high ankle sprain can range from four to six weeks.

Stewart was one of the most feared signal callers in Region 7-AAAAA before being injured, having passed for more than 1,000 yards and a dozen touchdowns in two-and-a-half games.

Without Stewart in the lineup Friday, Collins Hill's defense recorded five interceptions, including one pick six against backup Quarterback Will DeLorenzo.

But Jarvis was quick to say the loss wasn't DeLorenzo's fault. "He played well, but we would have lost no matter who was at quarterback," he said.

Unfortunately, the Wildcats have lost another starter, safety Will Cardwell, who suffered a concussion Friday. It was his second concussion this year and likely means he will miss the rest of the season.

GIRLS VOLLEYBALL

It was a difficult week for the Duluth volleyball team. First, the 'Cats lost to Mill Creek 25-8, 25-13 on Tuesday. Next came a 25-14, 25-12 loss to North Gwinnett in the Gwinnett County Volleyball Championships on Thursday, followed by a 25-13, 25-20 loss to Providence to round out the week.

GIRLS SOFTBALL

Duluth's softball team had a little more good fortune. The 'Cats defeated Peachtree Ridge 2-0 Tuesday in a Region 7-AAAAA game as pitcher Jeanie Perrucci set a personal season high 13 strikeouts.

Casey Nellums was a perfect 3-for-3 at the plate and scored a run for the 'Cats. Erin Lipps added a hit and RBI, and Toni Perrucci added a hit for Duluth.

But the 'Cats lost a Thursday matchup to another Region 7-AAAAA rival Collins Hill, 7-3. Calli Star sparked the Collins Hill offense with a 3-for-4 effort and two runs scored.

Duluth (16-10, 5-6) led 1-0 going into the fifth inning, when Collins Hill erupted for four runs to take the lead for good. Reina Sycamore led the Duluth offense, going 2-for-3 at the plate. Jeanie Perrucci and Lindsey McKinney each went 1-for-3 with an RBI.
