Duluth High School Sports Roundup

Duluth held a signing ceremony last week for athletes who will head to college next fall on scholarships.

Duluth High School honored 13 of its best athletes last week who will be headed to college next fall on college scholarships. Among the signees are soccer players Erin Falk (Columbia), Brooke Clement (Berry), Eros Kilgore (Andrew College) and Edwin Romero (Shorter).

The group also includes softball signees Samantha Metzler (Southern Union) and Elanna Worthy (Claflin University) and tennis players Phoebe Chiem (City University of New York-Queens College) and Amryn Soldier (UNC-Asheville).

The other signees honored were cross country’s Casey Brown (West Georgia), basketball’s Aliya Thomas (Brewton-Parker), baseball’s Jacob Timmie (Maryville College), golf’s Justin Cho (Purdue) and track and field’s Maya Thomas (Georgia).

GIRLS SOCCER

Erin Falk and Rebekka Cancino scored the goals and goalkeeper Taylor Torrance got the shutout in Duluth’s 2-0 win over visiting South Gwinnett on Monday.

BOYS LACROSSE

Adam Printz recorded four goals and three assists Tuesday and Ronnie Adams added four goals to lead host North Gwinnett (6-7) to a 15-6 win over host Duluth on Tuesday.  Joe Whitaker and James Shimkus each scored a pair of goals for the Bulldogs and Cooper Herren saved eight shots at keeper. Brandon Eckart, Charlie Hall and each scored two goals for the Bulldogs.

GIRLS LACROSSE

North Gwinnett slipped past Duluth 8-7 Tuesday with the help of five goals by Ashleigh Clark, who also collected eight ground balls. Keeper Mehndi Patel saved 12 shots. Katie Varret added eight ground balls and a goal.

BASEBALL

The top two teams in Region 7-AAAAA squared off Tuesday and Mill Creek came away a 7-3 winner over Duluth.

Chip Fleming tossed a complete-game, two-hitter for Mill Creek (16-6, 11-4), striking out six while his teammates banged out 12 hits to carve out the victory.

Mill Creek's Connor Kasten, went 3-for-3 with two doubles, a homer, two runs and two RBI and teammate Devin Bonin lined a two-run homer over the fence in left center.

The Wildcats Evan Dumas went 2-for-3 with a homer, two RBI and two runs. Zack Erwin went 5 2⁄3 innings, allowing five runs on 10 hits with eight strikeouts and no walks.

The Wildcats bounced back on Friday night with an 8-0 win over host Peachtree Ridge.

Chris Rich struck out five en route to a two-hit shutout. He also chipped in on offense with an RBI single in the eighth inning..

Eric Sutor and David Matton each had two hits and an RBI.
