Duluth High School Sports Report

Duluth High names Colette Leima top female athlete. Baseball team wins two one-run decisions.

 Senior soccer player Colette Leima has been named Female Athlete of the Year for Duluth High School in 2011. Colette, a co-captain on the women's varsity team, will graduate this year and plans to attend Kennesaw State University in the fall.

Duluth High School's  fourth annual Soccer Alumni Game is scheduled for Saturday, April 30, at Cecil Morris Field. The women's game will start at 5:30 p.m. followed by he men's game at 7 p.m. 

Baseball

The Wildcats baseball team showed it can win close games at home or on the road last week. Traveling to Jacksonville, FL, on Tuesday, the Wildcats edged Trinity Christian Academy 5-4.

Zach Irwin (6-2) threw five strong innings for the Wildcats, giving up just two earned runs while striking out eight. Noah Hoback led the way with a pair of hits and an RBI. Tommy Matton added a hit and 2 RBI.

On Friday, Jacob Timmie's clutch, two-run single in the sixth inning helped Duluth (14-7, 8-5) slip past Mountain View 3-2 in a 7-AAAAA game.

Pitching remains a strong suit for the Wildcats who got another strong performance from Chris Rich (5-2). Rich allowed just one earned run while striking out six. John Clark earned his third save of the season, pitching a scoreless seventh inning.

Alex Raffensberger and David Matton led the offense with two hits each. Raffensberger belted a solo homer.

Girls Lacrosse

The Wildcats (6-5-1) started the week with an 11-6 win over Rockdale on Monday. Ajahna Grosvenor provided much of the offensive punch, scoring four goals and Ali Cole and Katherine Hsish added two goals each.

Paige Falkowski had a solid night in the goal with six saves.

On Thursday it was Cole leading the way with five goals as the Wildcats battled to a 9-9 draw with Grayson. Grosvenor scored three goals, and Noah Holt added a goal and one assist.

Boys Tennis

Duluth boys bowed out of the Region 7-AAAAA tournament Wednesday with a 3-1 loss to Mill Creek. Brad Adkins won the No. 3 singles match for Mill Creek. The Hawks doubles teams of Travis Hanes and Zach Martinez and Tucker Fleming and Josh Mellott also won.

Boys Soccer

Duluth lost a hard fought match at North Gwinnett Saturday night when the Wildcats gave up two early goals. Edwin Romero put one in the back of the net for Duluth but it wasn't enough as the final score was 1-5 Bulldogs. 

The Wildcats host South Gwinnett Monday for Senior Night at Cecil Morris Field. The women's game starts at 5:55 p.m. The boys follow with seniors from both the men's and women's teams being honored between games. 

Chris Cook of Peachtree Ridge scored two goals on Tuesday to help the Lions (13-2, 4-2) to a 5-1 win over host Duluth in Region 7-AAAAA.

Peachtree Ridge's Michael Valenzuela, Derek Bryant and Jeremy Rector each scored one goal, while Mitch Kupstas and Daryl Sack shared time at keeper with seven saves.

Girls Soccer

Peachtree Ridge outlasted Duluth 4-3 on penalty kicks Tuesday to pick up its fourth 7-AAAAA win of the season by a 3-2 score. Scoring in regulation for the Lions (9-8, 4-2) were Emily Edmond and Shelby Jennings. Julianna Lutherk, Allana Dineen, Katie Fitton, and Baillie Burmaster added the penalty kicks.
