Duluth High School Fall Sports Roundup

The record may be the same as last year, but don't confuse these Wildcats with last year's football team. Duluth's exciting aerial attack has the Wildcats averaging 41 points per game and keeping fans on the edge of their seats for four quarters.

Β

After a heartbreaking 43-41 triple overtime loss to host Alpharetta Friday, the Duluth Wildcats are 2-1 on the season, just like a year ago. But before you draw any comparison to 2010, stop right there!

This is a brand new season and the 2011 Wildcats are putting on one of the most exciting offensive, shows in Gwinnett County. If the defense can kick it up a notch, Duluth just may be headed for the state playoffs at the end of the regular season.

Coach Corey Jarvis Wildcats are averaging 41 points a game. On a bad night, quarterback Anfornee Stewart threw for 221 yards and four touchdowns. On a good night, he struck for 353 yards and five scores. In just three games, Stewart is already approaching the 1,000 yard passing mark and has struck for 12 TDs.

Moreover, the offense is no one-trick pony. Stewart has two sensational wide receivers in Myles Campbell and Michael Randle. That tandem is driving defensive backs absolutely crazy. Campbell took Archer's secondary to school in the season opener, hauling in three touchdown passes and totaling more than 200 yards receiving. He's averaging about 130 yards a game receiving.

But opponents can't afford to pay too much attention to the elusive Campbell because when they do, Stewart finds Randle in single coverage and the result is another big gainer.

How much better is this team than last year?

Alpharetta embarrassed Duluth 44-17 last year on the Wildcats home turf. This season, Duluth took them to triple overtime at Alpharetta and, except for a roughing the passer penalty in the second overtime, Duluth would be 3-0 for the first time in 26 years.

VOLLEYBALL

Duluth dropped a heartbreaker to visiting Norcross 25-23, 29-31, 27-25 on Tuesday. Sydney Marshall had 19 kills, and Kamilah Bakari added 14 kills and 11 blocks for the Blue Devils.

The Wildcats, however, rebounded to beat Chamblee 21-25, 25-23, 25-14. Katie Powell paced the winners with 18 kills and nine blocks in the two matches while Stephanie Dixon had 18 kills. Abby Powell added 16 digs and 15 kills, and Lacey Ricks had 27 assists for the Wildcats.

It's not easy to win on the road, but Duluth's volleyball team earned a couple of road wins last week, beating Grayson 22-25, 25-17 and 25-18 before beating Central Gwinnett 25-19, 25-10. Jasmine Gilmore served up eight aces for the Wildcats (10-6). Stephanie Dixon had 10 kills to pace the victory, and Abby Powell added 10 digs.

SOFTBALL

Duluth 5, Mountain View 2

The Wildcats chalked up an important Region 7-AAAAA win last week, beating visiting Mountain View 5-2. Jeanie Perrucci and Jessica Brown combined to hold Mountain View to two runs.

Cassie Kooker led Duluth hitters with a 2-for-3 effort at the plate. Brown, Gracie Delorenzo and Toni Perrucci all added hits for the Wildcats, who improved to 7-5 overall and 3-4 in region play.
