Accomplishment: Michael Xu is the eighth-grade captain of Duluth
Middle School’s 2010-2011 Academic Bowl A-team, one of the top academic teams in the state, and he serves as secretary of Duluth’s National Junior Honor Society (NJHS).
Key to Awesomeness: Michael has a very unassuming character, one that draws both students and teachers to him. As captain of Duluth Middle’s Academic Bowl A-Team, he coordinates practices, chooses teammates to play at tournaments and is responsible for making sure team members are prepared. Michael has been a captain that everyone can follow and respect. He understands what is needed at each tournament and knows when to play certain members based on their expertise. As secretary of NJHS, he is responsible for keeping minutes, preparing agendas, and has also been instrumental in communicating with Plantation South for the club’s going service project. Michael can always be counted on to do what is asked of him and more. He always shows respect to peers and teachers alike. He has maintained a 95% grade point average in the gifted program since sixth grade, no small feat.
