Georgia Gwinnett College Videos 'Harlem Shake'

An army in Norway has done it. A television news crew in Louisiana has done it. And now a college in Lawrenceville has done it — filmed a version of the viral video the “Harlem Shake.”

Dozens of Georgia Gwinnett College students and staff members came to the quad for the filming. Many of them dressed in crazy costumes like a Mexican wrestler, Harry Potter and even one student wearing a couple of boxes as his outfit.

The group’s organizer, bookstore manager Maggie Heatley, is dressed in what she describes as “Grizzly Gangnam Style.” Heatley wears a wig and white blazer similar to another internet sensation, Psy, along with a GGC T-shirt.

“It's a great thing to do to show school spirit, pull everyone together,” said Heatley. “We try to do things like this throughout the year for different holidays, but this was just nice to get everyone together and dance when it wasn’t a holiday.”

If you’re unfamiliar with the Harlem Shake, it’s a song by DJ-producer Baauer. The viral videos start with one person in a mask or costume dancing as those around them continue what they are doing — oblivious to what is going on. Then when the beat drops, the video cuts to the entire group dancing along, often times in costumes and masks as well.

The videos have tallied up hundreds of millions of hits on YouTube. The Norwegian army’s version alone is at more than 55 million views so far. Although the clips are popular, they are not without controversy. Some residents in Harlem, NY, call the new Harlem Shake a mockery of the original version created in the 1980s and popularized in the ‘90s by music mogul Sean “Diddy” Combs.
