"Despite a few sprinkles in the beginning, the race went very wel,l and we all had a great time running/walking to support Relay for Life," said Patrice Pendergast, GCPS recruitment coordinator and an event committee member.

"We honored cancer survivors, those who are currently battling and those who
have lost the battle," Pendergast added.

Besides GCPS employees, participants included student cross country runners, community members, friends and relatives. Winn Holt Elementary and Duluth Middle School won participation awards.

Volunteers included Gwinnett County police officers and emergency medical technicians. More than 30 students from various high schools also assisted.

And, for the volunteers' and participants' efforts, a representative from the American Cancer Society was there to thank them.

"This was definitely a group effort," Pendergast said.
