Work is underway on improvements to Old City Hall Block parking areas in downtown Duluth.

Phase 1 includes removal of the old police barn and lumber shed in the parking lot behind Boudreaux’s Cajun Market and Café, grading, rebuilding a stairway, addition of a sidewalk alongside Ga. Hwy. 120, and landscaping. The project also involves patching the asphalt parking lot and restriping.

The contractor started work the week of May 9 on this project. Chris McGahee, the city's economic development manager took multiple photos of the work including tearing down the buildings. Click on the PDF accompanying this article to see his photos.

The Duluth City Council recently allocated $84,350 in downtown parking SPLOST funds to implement the Phase 1 improvements. The council also authorized spending up to $15,000 in additional SPLOST funds for a three-phase engineering plan to improve  parking areas in the Old City Hall Block.

The improvements are part of an effort to improve parking areas and signage in anticipation of Pure Taqueria opening in downtown Duluth this summer. The popular restaurant is expected to attract about 550 diners daily.

The council also approved Phase 1 of a downtown wayfinding signage program that includes regulatory, parking, and directional signs for vehicles and pedestrians. The council designated $48,900 in SPLOST downtown parking funds to pay for Phase 1 of the signage program. Two gateway signs to the city would be added later at a cost not to exceed $50,000.

In a separate project, Ga. Hwy. 20 has just been resurfaced in front of and alongside the front and rear Beaudreaux's parking lots.
