What Are Recommended Allocations for SPLOST Funds?

There's less than a month before Gwinnett County voters will decide whether to renew the SPLOST. And a special citizens committee has made recommendations on how to divvy up funds if they are approved.

According to the Gwinnett County website, the six-member citizen panel has recommended that the largest chunk of initial proceeds -- $47.6 million -- be allocated to a "major roads" category. Intersections come in second, at $33 million.

On Nov. 5, Gwinnett County voters will go to the ballot box to decide whether to renew the current 1 percent Special Purpose Local Option Sales Tax, for three years. That would keep Gwinnett County sales taxes at 6 percent.

Officials with the county and its cities have said they intend to use a large percentage of SPLOST proceeds for transportation projects.

A citizens panel has been tasked with reviewing and prioritizing prospective project categories for the proposed SPLOST program. The Citizens Project Selection Committee is made up of representatives of six major interest groups who were self-selected to serve on the committee, according to the county website. The panel held its first meeting Sept. 30.

A three-year SPLOST could bring in as much as $498, county officials say. About 79 percent would go to the county, with the rest going to the cities, and a small amount to the state for administrative costs.
