West Lawrenceville Street in Duluth Getting Facelift

Streetscape project includes new sidewalks, lighting, resurfacing and restriping of roadway.

West Lawrenceville Street, one of the gateways to the city of Duluth, is getting a facelift in the form of a streetscape.

This streetscape project includes new five feet wide sidewalks on the north side of the street, new five feet wide sidewalks on the south side of the street and resurfacing and restriping of the asphalt roadway, according to Alisa Williams, director of public information and marketing for the city. Existing sidewalks along the street will be replaced with the wider ones.

Also included are lighting improvements. Eleven new shepherd’s hook lights will replace seven existing cobra head lights on the north side of the street, Duluth Planner Melissa Muscato added. The shepherd’s hook lights will be mounted on the existing poles, she said.

The streetscape project got underway April 21 with the placement of marker flags and silt fence posts by Georgia Development Partners, the contractor hired by the city to do the work. The $410,000 cost of the project is being funded through the one-cent Special Purpose Local Option Sales Tax (SPLOST), Williams said. The project runs from Hill Street to the proposed Roundabout in the 3600 Block of West Lawrenceville, Muscato said.

The project is expected to be completed by June 30. “The contractor for this project will maintain the traffic control plan to ensure safe travel through West Lawrenceville during this construction period,” Williams said. “Please exercise caution and a little extra patience when driving West Lawrenceville Street over the next two months.“
