Vegetable Garden Popular Summer Day Camp Activity

Master gardener Helen Jones presented plaque for planting and maintaining garden during Duluth's summer day camp at Bunten Road Park.

The Duluth Parks and Recreation Department recognized Duluth master gardener Helen Jones at the Monday (Sept. 12) Duluth City Council meeting for planting and maintaining a vegetable garden during summer day camp at Bunten Road Park. The garden was a popular activity for campers ages 8 and up.

Sherry McCann obtained a local grant to establish a gardening program for youth in the community, which parks and recreation staff incorporated into the summer day camp program. Campers were taught gardening techniques and worked with Jones and McCann to plant and harvest vegetables. Campers and staff enjoyed the plentiful vegetables the garden produced.

The plaque presented to Jones by Duluth Parks and Recreation Director Kathy Marelle featured photographs of vegetables grown and harvested in the garden. Jones is the mother of Duluth City Councilman Billy Jones. During the school year, Duluth Fabulous After Fifty is interested in continuing the garden.
