Two Eagle Scouts Honored for Park Projects

Two Eagle Scouts were presented with plaques containing photos of their city parks projects by Duluth Mayor Nancy Harris and Kathy Marelle, director of the Duluth Parks & Recreation Department. The ceremony occurred at the Feb. 11 Duluth City Council meeting.

Eagle Scout Jonathan Van Eerten from Troop 56 was recognized for completion of his Eagle Scout project at Rogers Bridge Park.

Jonathan dismantled the old, decaying foot bridges near Pavilion 1. He designed and built new foot bridges that connect pedestrian walkways from the pavilion to the park green space. Jonathan's footbridges saved the city from having to appropriate maintenance funds for the bridges.

Jonathan also installed directional signage directing park patrons to parking, playground and pavilions at the park.

Eagle Scout Matthew Dalton from Troop 419 was recognized for completion of his Eagle Scout project at W.P. Jones Park.

Matthew designed and installed directional signage for the park nature trail, designed and built seating areas along the trail, and improved the trail surface.

The W.P. Jones nature trail is utilized by the surrounding neighborhoods. The directional signs will navigate park patrons through the various turns and sections of the nature trail. The seating areas offer places for walkers to rest and enjoy nature.
