Third Duluth Citizens Budget Committee Forming

Committee members will help city decide what to keep and cut in FY2012 budget

Duluth citizens will again have an opportunity to help the city decide what to do when revenues needed to run the city are down. The Citizens Budget Committee will advise the city on what to keep and what to cut in the fiscal year 2012 budget and suggest new fees to generate revenue. The third Citizens Budget Committee is forming and will begin meeting in March, the city announced.

The city’s involvement of citizens in the 2010 and 2011 budget process was recognized by the Georgia Municipal Association and the Atlanta Regional Commission as examples for other cities to follow and was adopted by the Gwinnett County Commission.

Committee meetings are scheduled every Thursday March 24-April 28 from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. in the Community Room at Duluth City Hall. Attendance at all six meetings is encouraged. Detailed information about city finances will be provided to committee members.

At the conclusion of the meetings, the Citizens Budget Committee will make recommendations to the Duluth City Council on balancing the FY2012 budget. In years past about 44 citizens signed up to serve on the committees. The number will only be limited by the size of the available meeting space. Citizens interested in participating should e-mail Susan Weber at sweber@duluthga.net. Communication with committee members will be by e-mail whenever possible.
