A controversial one-cent sales tax has been proposed to fund 157 transportation projects in 10 metro Atlanta counties including Gwinnett. Voters will vote "yes" or "no" for TSPLOST in a referendum in the Primary. The issue appears on both Democratic and Republican ballots. If approved, the sales tax would go into effect Jan. 1.

Two of the projects would benefit Duluth– four-laning Buford Highway, currently two-lane, from Old Peachtree Road to Sugarloaf Parkway and six-laning Pleasant Hill Road, now four lanes, from Howell Ferry Road to the Chattahoochee River. In addition, the city would receive an estimated $500,000 a year for 10 years to fund local transportation improvements such as road paving, intersection upgrades and traffic signals.

Incumbent 7th District U.S. Rep. Rob Woodall, R-Lawrenceville, whose constituency includes Duluth, faces two challengers, a Republican and a Democrat, in his bid for re-election to a second term.

They are Republican David Hancock, chief operating officer of Alpharetta-based Automation Control Products, and Democrat Steve Reilly, a Lawrenceville attorney. The winner of the GOP Primary would run against Reilly in the Nov. 6 General Election.

District 48 State Sen. David Shafer, R-Duluth, is unopposed for re-election.

District 5 State Sen. Curt Thompson, D-Tucker, is also running unopposed for re-election after Republican Gary Guan of Norcross withdrew before the Primary.

District 97 State Rep. Brooks Coleman, R-Duluth, faces Republican opponent Robert J. McClure, a law student from Suwanee. The winner would be decided in the Primary.

Republicans Mark Williams of Duluth and Mark Garmon of Norcross are vying to run against incumbent District 96 State Rep. Pedro "Pete" Marin, D-Duluth, in November.

Former Suwanee Councilman Jace Brooks and Duluth resident Laurie McClain, whose accounting firm is based in Suwanee, both Republicans, are running for Shirley Lasseter's former seat on the Gwinnett County Commission in a race to be decided in the Primary. District 1 includes Duluth, Suwanee and Sugar Hill.

Incumbent Dr. Mary Kay Murphy of Peachtree Corners has been challenged by Jennifer Falk of Berkeley Lake. Murphy is running as a Republican and Falk as a Democrat, so the winner would not be determined until November.

Three retiring judges have created vacancies for Gwinnett Superior Court, State Court and Probate Court.

A five-way race has developed to fill the Gwinnett Superior Court judgeship being vacated by retiring Judge K. Dawson Jackson. The candidates in this race are Tracey Mason Blasi, Chris McClurg, Kathy Schrader, Giles Sexton, and Robert D. Walker.

Five candidates are seeking to replace Gwinnett State Court Judge Robert “Bob” Mock, who also is retiring. They are Emily Brantley, Pam Britt, Norman Cuadra, Greg Lundy, and Richard Winegarden.

Chris Ballar and Marlene Duwell are running for Gwinnett Probate Judge. The vacancy is being created by retiring Judge Walter J. Clarke.
