Qualifying Underway for Duluth November Election

Mayoral and two city council posts to be on ballot in Nov. 8 election at Duluth City Hall.

Duluth residents will find out this week who will be running for Duluth mayor and Posts 4 and 5 on the Duluth City Council in the Nov. 8 municipal election. Incumbents are Mayor Nancy Harris and Councilmen Doug Mundrick (Post 4) and Greg Whitlock (Post 5). 

Qualifying starts at 8:30 a.m. Monday, Aug. 29, and continues from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. each day until Wednesday, Aug. 31. Four candidates qualified through Tuesday.

Mayor Harris has announced she plans to seek re-election to a second four-year term. Doug Mundrick has stated he does not plan to run for re-election. Mundrick has served two two-year and three four-year terms on the city council. He previously served four years on the city's Zoning Board of Appeals. His service to the city will add up to 20 years when he retires in early January.

Kelly Kelkenberg, a member of the city’s Planning Commission, and Dusty Graham, who chaired the 2011 Citizens Budget Advisory Committee, have announced they will seek election to Mundrick’s Post 4 on the council.

Kelkenberg was the first to qualify for Post 4 Monday morning, according to Duluth City Clerk Teresa Lynn. Graham qualified Tuesday.

Whitlock has announced he will run for a second four-year term.

Harris qualified for re-election as mayor on Tuesday. Whitlock also qualified for re-election Tuesday.

A referendum allowing Sunday liquor sales will also be on ballot. If approved by a majority vote, the referendum would authorize retailers in counties and cities that already allow package sales of beer, wine and distilled spirits to sell alcoholic beverages from 12:30 p.m. to 11:30 p.m. on Sundays.

The election will take place at Duluth City Hall. Deadline to register to vote is Oct. 11.
