Pure Taqueria Construction Progressing

Duluth continuing to spruce up downtown in anticipation of popular restaurant's fall opening.

With construction on Pure Taqueria progressing, Duluth is continuing to spruce up downtown in anticipation of the popular restaurant’s opening and bringing an estimated 550 diners into the city daily. Pure Taqueria is on target for a Sept. 17 opening.

Concrete footings for the restaurant at the corner of Ga. Hwy. 120 and Main Street were poured last Friday, Duluth Economic Development Manager Chris McGahee reported. The basement walls are scheduled to be poured this week, he said.

Downtown parking lots have been restriped, and there soon will be signs designating parking to make it easier for visitors to find spots. The city has identified 730 parking spaces available downtown.

Fresh paint demarcates parking spots in front of New Dawn Theater Company, Boudreaux’s Cajun Market & Café and The Boiler Room on Main Street. The rear parking lot has been cleaned up and storage sheds demolished. The second phase of improvements to the Old City Hall Block parking lot is expected to start soon, McGahee said.

The angle parking on Main Street in front of fyi Duluth design center and Accessorize Again has been replaced with parallel parking. Loading zones have been marked with cross hatch lines at Tie Dye 4 and fyi Duluth.

West Lawrenceville Street has been repaved, sidewalks installed, and new shepherd’s hook street lights erected on existing poles. Ga. Hwy 120 (Abbott’s Bridge Road) also has been resurfaced.

McGahee updated the Duluth Downtown Development Authority on the improvements at its June 28 meeting. DDA member Shelly Howard mentioned that downtown merchants want to place flower planters in front of their shops.

McGahee added that he and Planning Director Glenn Coyne have come up with a list of minor cosmetic issues to be addressed prior to the restaurant opening. Also, fyi Design plans to transform the area behind the former Economy Pharmacy into an outdoor patio, he said.
