Presidential Inauguration: Yes, There's an App for That

A new smartphone app provides live streaming, among other things. Also, check developments leading up to Monday's events.

President Barack Obama's inauguration for his second term is Monday, Jan. 21, in Washington, D.C. And not surprisingly, you can keep track of events as they happen in the palm of your hand.

According to The Washington Post, the Presidential Inaugural Committee has developed a new smartphone app to enable features such as live streaming and a schedule of the day's events.

Also, users can search for volunteer events that are  keyed to Sunday’s National Day of Service, and share information with others via Twitter, Facebook, e-mail and text message.

In other inauguration news:

  • Food truck culture is present for the big event, according to the Washington Post. “It was Inauguration Day four years ago when D.C.’s first food truck — Fojol Bros. — first hit the streets,” Che Ruddell-Tabisola, executive director of the DC Food Truck Association, told the Post, “so it marks not only their birthday, but the beginning of the industry in D.C.”
  • The president actually will be sworn in on Sunday, Jan. 20, according to the Washington Times. Because Inauguration Day falls on a Sunday in 2013, Obama will be sworn in during a small private ceremony a day before the public ceremony. President Obama will use a Bible that belongs to the family of First Lady Michelle Obama. The ceremony is open only to selected guests, friends and family.
  • Obama still has plenty of critics, including those who believe he is in office illegally. “This inauguration is a mistake and those who permit it to happen will have to live with their own consciences,” a retired Air Force officer told the Washington Post.
