Plan to Detour Around I-85 Bridge at Pleasant Hill Road This Weekend

The bridge in the Duluth area is scheduled to reopen at 5 a.m. Monday with DDI configuration.

Reminder: This is the weekend to avoid the Pleasant Hill Road bridge at I-85 or detour around it. At 9 p.m. Friday (June 7) the Gwinnett County Department of Transportation will close the Pleasant Hill Road bridge over I-85 in the Duluth area to complete the Diverging Diamond Interchange crossover.

The bridge is expected reopen to traffic with the new DDI configuration at 5 a.m. Monday, June 10.

The bridge will be closed to all through-traffic over the weekend, although construction will not impact right turn access to or from I-85. Drivers and pedestrians should take the planned detour: Pleasant Hill Road to Satellite Boulevard to Steve Reynolds Boulevard to Shackleford Road to Pleasant Hill Road and the reverse.

The DDI project involves shifting traffic to the opposite side of the bridge, which is expected to make left turns onto the interstate easier and improve the flow of traffic across the bridge.

Funding for this project has been provided by the 2009 SPLOST sales tax program, Gwinnett Place Community Improvement District (CID) and State Road and Tollway Authority.

For motorists on I-85, a suggested alternative is to take the Steve Reynolds Boulevard Exit off I-85 and follow the detour route.

The county will be monitoing traffic signal timing on these routes throughout the weekend so that adjustments can be made to ease congestion. Drivers may still see heavy traffic at times during the closure and should plan for some delays.
