New Signs Installed in Downtown Duluth

Phase 1 of wayfinding signage program involves erecting 24 informational, directional and regulatory signs in downtown Duluth.

Installation of new decorative signs in downtown Duluth is almost finished. The 24 signs represent Phase 1 of a wayfinding signage program initiated by the Duluth City Council.

The signs, designed by Atlanta-based Sky Design, were fabricated and installed by Norcross-based Architectural Signing. Installation is expected to be completed by Friday (Aug. 5), according to Alisa Williams, director of public information and marketing for the city.

The signs include vehicular and pedestrian directional signs, parking, regulatory (stop signs), and regulatory/street name combination signs. Two secondary gateway signs were removed from Phase 1 and will be added to another phase when locations are determined, Williams said.

Combination stop sign/street name signs have been erected at West Lawrenceville and Main streets and West Lawrenceville and Hill streets. Locations for pedestrian directional signs include the parking lot behind the Festival Center and for vehicular directional signs on West Lawrenceville Street.

According to Williams, the signs being installed in the first phase include:

  • Regulatory (stop signs) – 9
  • Regulatory/Street name Combo – 2

The signs indicating public parking lots and spaces are expected to be particularly useful when Pure Taqueria opens in mid-September bringing more than 500 diners into downtown Duluth daily. The city has also been cleaning up and improving downtown parking lots in preparation for the popular restaurant’s opening.

City workers have been straightening old signs, many of which were leaning. Merchants are planning to install planters in front of their shops on Main Street.
