New Chattahoochee River Canoe Launch in Duluth 'Christened'

The launch at Rogers Bridge Park in Duluth provides better access to the river for canoers, rafters and tubers.

Duluth city officials and guests christened the new canoe launch Saturday (July 20) on the Chattahoochee River at Rogers Bridge Park by sprinkling water on it and snipping a ribbon. The concrete launch replaces a dirt ramp.

Free β€œThis is how we row” T-shirts, bottled water with canoe launch labels, sunglasses and Frisbees were given away at the event. Two of the giveaway bottles of water were used in the ceremony.

Inflatables were set up nearby in the park for children to enjoy.

Guests were welcomed by Duluth Mayor Nancy Harris and Duluth Parks and Recreation Director Kathy Marelle, who both noted the launch was paid for with SPLOST funds. The Duluth City Council and Parks and Advisory Board members were in attendance.

The Rogers Bridge Canoe Launch makes it easier for canoers, rafters and tubers to access the river. The concrete launch includes a walk-down canoe ramp, a step-down boardwalk, a viewing area, and natural plantings.

After the ceremony, some guests took advantage of an offer to tube to Abbotts Bridge. $10 River Tubing provided the free tubing excursions to the first 25 guests who registered.

Designed by Atlanta-based HDR Engineering, the canoe launch was constructed by Reeves Contracting Co. of Sugar Hill.
