Installation of 60 Signs Begins This Week on I-85

Overnight work will require lane closing and traffic pacing as part of the HOT toll conversion.

As part of the conversion of the existing , the Georgia Department of Transportation will begin installing more than 60 signs along the I-85 corridor this week.

The work will take place overnight in DeKalb and Gwinnett counties. Traffic pacing may occur during 11 p.m. and 4 a.m.

This week, as weather permits, one or two segments of the HOV or inside lanes along the median wall in both directions will be closed. Northbound lane closures will take place between 10 p.m. and 5 a.m. and southbound closures will occur from 8 p.m. to 5 a.m. Up to three lanes could be closed after midnight. Traffic will be paced one to three times as needed. Overnight lane closures may occur at the following locations:

  • Sunday, May 15 - Along the median wall from Pleasantdale Road to SR 140/Jimmy Carter Boulevard.
  • Monday, May 16 – Along the median wall from Northcrest Road to Shallowford Road and a second work zone from Boggs Road to Sugarloaf Parkway.
  • Thursday, May 19 - Along the median wall from I-285 to Pleasantdale Road and a second work zone on SR 316 from I-85 to Sugarloaf Parkway.
  • Tuesday, May 17 - Along the median wall from Clairmont Road to Chamblee Tucker Road and a second work zone from Pleasant Hill Road to Boggs Road.
  • Wednesday, May 18 - Along the median wall from Shallowford Road to I-285 and a second work zone from SR 378/Beaver Ruin Road to Steve Reynolds Boulevard.

This week, as weather permits, one or two segments of the HOV lanes along the median wall in both directions will also be closed during the daytime hours. Northbound lane closures will take place between 9 a.m. and 2 p.m. and southbound closures will occur from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. The planned daytime lane closures include:

  • Monday, May 16-18 – Work will occur on I-85 north and south closing the left lane or HOV lane from Pleasantdale Road to south of SR 140/Jimmy Carter Boulevard.

The I-85 Express Lanes Project includes installation of 16 miles of fiber and signage along Interstate Highway 85 between Chamblee Tucker Road and Old Peachtree Road and along State Route 316 between I-85 and Riverside Parkway.

When completed, registered transit buses, motorcycles, alternative fueled vehicles and vehicles with three or more passengers will be allowed to use the inside (left) HOT lane for free, while single and double occupant vehicles will be allowed to use the lane if they choose to pay a variably priced toll.
