Hot Air Balloon Outdoor Exhibit This Saturday

Shelly Howard displays some of the creatively decorated hot air balloons that will be placed on buildings and hung from trees in downtown Duluth.

Shelly Howard displays some of the decorated hot air balloon forms to be placed on buildings in Historic Downtown Duluth and hung from trees on the Duluth Town Green for a “Duluth is Taking Off…Come Along for the Ride” outdoor art exhibit Saturday, Sept. 17. The art celebrates the opening of seven new businesses in Historic Downtown Duluth. Downtown merchants will host open houses that day. About 150 hot air balloons have been decorated for the exhibit. Howard obtained permission from the Duluth City Council at its Monday (Sept. 12) meeting to display the hot air balloon art downtown. The art will remain up for 30 days. Howard also obtained the council’s permission to place planters downtown that are being donated by citizens. The Duluth Fall Festival is purchasing colorful mums for the planters to greet visitors at the Sept. 24-25 festival. Both projects are being coordinated by the Community Volunteer League, a subcommittee of the Downtown Development Authority. Howard said the CVL plans four seasonal events a year.
