Hey, What’s Cookin’ in Duluth?

Duluth City Councilman Billy Jones will be defending his championship title at the second annual City Council Chili Cook-off Thursday, Aug. 16, from 6 to 9 p.m. on the . Jones won last year’s contest by entering three versions – mild and spicy turkey chili and a hearty venison chili. His venison chili was voted the best.

The chili cook-off is part of the last “No Reason Block Party” of the season hosted by the city for the community. Smokey’s Farmland Band will play bluegrass music while party guests taste and judge chili cooked by Jones and other Duluth City Council members Marsha Bomar, Jim Dugan, Kelly Kelkenberg, and Greg Whitlock.

Councilman Whitlock, who came in second at the first chili cook-off last year, is fired up and ready to challenge the defending champion. New Councilman Kelkenberg will be participating in the contest for the first time.

Admission to the party, and the chili sampling are free.

There will also be other pots of chili prepared by city staff and volunteers available. Guests can get a large bowl of this chili by giving a monetary donation to Hands of Christ - A Duluth Cooperative Ministry. The ministry operates a food pantry and thrift store.

The Best of Brews will offer draft beer for sale to go along with the chili, and Crave Pie Studio will sell mini pies for dessert. Free family-friendly and family-friendly activities such as tug of war, sack races, trivia and more will also be available.

Party-goers are encouraged to bring lawn chairs to listen to the concert. They may bring in outside food and beverages.
