Gwinnett SPLOST Voting Comes Closer to Duluth

Satellite voting begins Saturday at locations throughout Gwinnett, including Suwanee.

Soon, Duluth voters won't have to go far to vote in the Gwinnett SPLOST election.

Advance voting at satellite locations will begin Saturday, Oct. 26, for the referendum on whether to renew the 1 percent Special Purpose Local Option Sales Tax. George Pierce Park in Suwanee is one of four satellite voting locations in Gwinnett, according to the county website.

After Saturday, voters can cast ballots at the satellite locations Monday through Friday, Oct. 28-Nov. 1. Election Day itself is Nov. 5.

The current SPLOST expires in March 2014, and county officials want to renew it for three years. Doing so would keep Gwinnett's sales tax rate at 6 percent.

Officials say renewing the tax could bring in as much as $498 million. About 78 percent would go to the county, with most of the rest divided up between Gwinnett's 16 cities.

Officials from the county and the cities say they plan to use most of the money for transportation projects.

However, officials announced this week that up to $5 million would be appropriated for an emergency notification system for Gwinnett schools.
