Gwinnett Pops the Cork Sunday on Alcohol Sales

The new law takes effect Sunday for unincorporated areas. Will it change your habits?

Retailers in unincorporated areas of Gwinnett will be able to sell packaged alcohol on Sunday, May 6, and Sundays thereafter. The Gwinnett commissioners in April amended the county's alcohol sales ordinance to move up the effective date.

Gwinnett residents approved Sunday sales in a referendum in March. Originally, June 1 was the effective start date. Sales are allowed from 12:30-11:30 p.m. on Sunday, although stores can set their own hours within that window.

Duluth and several other cities in Gwinnett have been allowing Sunday sales since last year.

Commissioners also established fees for retailers -- a $500 annual fee for a retailer selling both beer and wine on Sundays and $250 for a retailer selling one of those items.
