Gwinnett Ponders Headquarters Hotel at Arena

An RFP is being prepared to gauge interest in such a development.

It's still in the planning stages, but Gwinnett tourism officials want to gauge interest in a headquarters hotel that would be part of the Gwinnett Center/Arena complex.

Gwinnett tourism official Lisa Anders noted that Gwinnett County officials are reviewing the Request For Proposals. The motivation comes from the Convention and Visitors Bureau, which operates the arena and the center.

Anders noted that hotel occupancy has been good in Gwinnett in 2011, though rates are slowly working upward. A "headquarters hotel" has been needed for a long time, she added, but officials don't want "just another hotel." She said an RFP would be "testing the waters."

In the Sugarloaf Parkway/I-85 area, near the center and arena, there are several boutique-type hotels. But those are generally suited to business and personal travelers.

The phrase "headquarters hotel" is unclear as to what they are proposing. A full service hotel with convention space would probably sum it up better.

You have the right idea, Tammy. I was using their description.

Good! Build it! However, don't build it on the TAXPAYER'S dime. We don't need the possibility of another financial albatross hanging around the necks of our grandchildren, their children, their children's children, etc. should this venture be built with county bonds. Financial albatross? The possiblity of having to raise taxes to retire bond debt should projected occupancy rates fail to materialize which is what the taxpayers of this county face should the Gwinnett Braves stadium fail to meet revenue projections which would retire the bond debt for that facility.

Jimmy, thanks for the comment. We'll be watching all developments with this.

to clarify...the RFP is being issued by the Convention and Visitors Bureau, not the county. The potential project would be privately funded, not funded by the county.
