Gwinnett Highlighting County Programs, Services

Daily GJAC tours offered. Open House planned at Gwinnett Fallen Heroes Memorial later in April.

Gwinnett is highlighting county programs and services during National County Government Month in April. This year’s theme is "Serving Our Veterans, Armed Forces, and Their Families," the county announced. Tours and other activities are planned to raise awareness of county government and to honor Gwinnett residents and employees who are veterans or active military.

Free, one-hour tours of the Gwinnett Justice and Administration Center (GJAC), located at 75 Langley Drive in Lawrenceville, will be offered throughout April from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. To schedule a tour call 770-822-7180. Groups of 10 or more should call at least 48 hours in advance. Visitors under 18 must be accompanied by an adult.

The county is also partnering with Soldiers’ Angels, a volunteer organization that supports deployed military men and women and their families through a variety of special projects, including a Christmas stocking drive to collect supplies for troops overseas, according to the announcement.

The greatest need is for small hygiene items. Residents are encouraged to donate lip balm, individually wrapped toothbrushes and travel-sized hygiene items, including deodorant, shampoo, conditioner, shower gel, toothpaste, dental floss, lotion, hand sanitizer, mouthwash and facial cleanser for Georgia troops overseas. These items may be dropped off at any Gwinnett County Fire Station, the Department of Water Resources Headquarters at 684 Winder Highway in Lawrenceville or the Gwinnett Justice and Administration Center.

Gwinnett citizens are invited to an open house at the Fallen Heroes Memorial at 5:30 p.m. April 26 to learn about the memorial and recognize the  county's military heroes. The memorial on the grounds of the Gwinnett Justice and Administration Center honors Gwinnett residents who died in the line of duty in military or public service. The memorial opened in 2003 and was built with private donations and county government funds.
