Frozen Ground Broken for Active Senior Center

Duluth officials brave cold weather to turn the earth for the center for active senior citizens.

The temperature was below freezing, and the ground was, well, frozen for the groundbreaking for an active senior center Tuesday morning at W.P. Jones Park in Duluth.

City officials, bundled up against the cold weather, managed to scrape bits of dirt into their shovels and pose for photos in front of a sign designating the site for the future center.

“If we have to hold our smiles too much longer,” quipped Councilwoman Marsha Bomar,  “they’ll become frozen.”

The temperature had dipped to about 20 degrees early Tuesday, and it had “warmed up” only a few degrees for the groundbreaking ceremony at 10 a.m.

Herb Link, chairman of the Duluth Senior Citizens Advisory Board, joined Mayor Nancy Harris, Duluth City Council members, Duluth Parks and Recreation Department Director Kathy Marelle and other officials for the ceremony. Members of the Senior Citizens Advisory Board also participated.

Construction is scheduled to begin this week on the 2,400-square-foot center for active senior citizens. The activity building should be completed in June, if there are no delays due to bad weather or unforeseen circumstances, and should open in August, according to Marelle. It should be warmer for the opening.

The center will serve the more than 300 members of the FAB (Fifty And Beyond) Club and as an events rental facility on evenings and weekends.

Renaissance Building Construction is building the center, which was designed by Hill Foley Rossi and Associates.

is located off Pleasant Hill Road.
