Four Qualify for Three Duluth Posts

Only Post 4 on city council to be contested on ballot in Nov. 8 municipal election.

There were no surprise qualifiers this week for the Duluth Municipal Election. The four candidates who previously announced had registered to place their names on the Nov. 8 ballot when qualifying ended at 4:30 p.m. Wednesday (Aug. 31). Qualifying began Monday.

Duluth City Clerk Teresa Lynn reported that incumbent Mayor Nancy Harris and incumbent Councilman Greg Whitlock (Post 5) both qualified for re-election to second four-year terms. They will have no opposition in the upcoming election.

Kelly Kelkenberg, a current member of the Duluth Planning Commission, and Dusty Graham, past chairman of the Citizens Budget Advisory Committee, both qualified to run for Post 4 on the city council, Lynn said. Post 4 is held by Councilman Doug Mundrick, who did not qualify for re-election.

Also on the ballot will be a referendum allowing Sunday liquor sales. If approved by a majority vote, the referendum would authorize retailers in counties and cities that already allow package sales of beer, wine and distilled spirits to sell alcoholic beverages from 12:30 p.m. to 11:30 p.m. on Sundays.
