Duluth's Tax Millage Rate to Stay the Same

The 5.991 millage rate will actually result in an estimated 2.21 percent decrease in property taxes this year.

The Duluth millage rate levied to support the FY2014 budget will remain the same as the past several years.

The Duluth City Council adopted a millage rate of 5.991 mills at its July 8 meeting. This rate has been in effect since 2010.

“We’re proud we’re not going to have the raise the millage rate,” Mayor Nancy Harris said.

The millage rate will actually result in an estimated 2.21 percent decrease in property taxes this year.

Despite the depressed economy, the mayor and council have tried to keep taxes low without negatively impacting the quality of city services, Harris said.

The balanced Fiscal Year 2014 budget, adopted by the council at its June 10 meeting, totals $70,810,893. It includes $20,382,390 in General Fund expenses and $16,291,531 in General Fund revenue. The city plans to use $4,090,859 in reserve funds, slightly less than last year, to make up the difference.

For comparison purposes, the FY2013 budget included $21,076,815 in General Fund expenses and $16,904,511 in General Fund revenue.

The FY2014 budget goes into effect July 1, 2013, and continues through June 30, 2014.
