Duluth Tobacco Free Signs Unveiled

Tobacco use prohibited in city parks, playgrounds and recreation facilities and the Duluth Town Green.

Signs that will be posted in Duluth parks and on the Duluth Town Green prohibiting smoking and tobacco use were unveiled at a Duluth City Council meeting this week. Duluth’s tobacco-free policy will be the first in Gwinnett and the 13th in Georgia.

Duluth Parks and Recreation Department Director Kathy Marelle and Nicole Love, representing the Duluth Parks and Recreation Advisory Board, displayed the signs at the March 12 meeting. They included sandwich boards and "Young Lungs at Play" signs.

The council adopted the tobacco free policy for the city’s parks, playgrounds and recreation facilities and the Duluth Town Green in December.

“Tobacco free is different from a “smoke-free” policy, which allows smoking in designated areas.

The policy prohibits smoking and tobacco use, including cigarettes, chewing tobacco, snuff, and smokeless tobacco, by staff and visitors at Duluth’s six parks and the community green 24 hours a day.

The signs were purchased using a grant from the State Health Department.

Tobacco free policies for parks are currently in effect in Athens-Clark County, Clayton, Henry, and Lumpkin counties and in the cities of Alpharetta and Roswell in Fulton County and Marietta in Cobb County.
