Duluth Sets Term Limits for Board Appointees

Duluth City Council also approves ordinance amendments that establish staggered four-year terms for members of commissions, boards and committees.

To standardize length of service for appointees to the city’s commissions, boards and committees, the Duluth City Council Monday (June 11) approved several ordinance amendments that establish staggered four-year terms for the Finance Committee, Alcoholic Review Board, Ethics Committee, Planning Commission, Zoning Board of Appeals, and Core Preservation District-Residential (CPD-R) Board. The council also approved a separate amendment setting term limits.

The amendments state the number of members and requirements to serve on the commissions, boards and committees.

The number of members on the Parks & Recreation Advisory Board was expanded from eight to nine to provide an odd number of members for voting purposes.

As for term limits, members of board and commissions would be allowed to serve three four-year terms plus two years in unfulfilled terms not to exceed a total of 14 years.

Any adjustments that need to be made in terms would be made by the council during the next round of appointments next spring.

  • The proposed FY2013 budget was unanimously adopted. The new budget includes a General Fund budget totaling $20.4 million, a 6.5 percent increase over the amended FY2012 General Fund budget of $19.2 million. The council had conducted a public hearing on the draft FY2013 budget at its May 14 meeting. The new budget goes into effect July 1. A copy is available on the city’s website at www.duluthga.net.
  • The council approved M2 (manufacturing) rezoning for a small parcel that had belonged to Gwinnett County at 3120 North Berkeley Lake Road. M2 rezoning for 4.72 acres on which Diamond Crystal Duluth is located at 3245 North Berkeley Lake Road had been approved by the council at its previous May 14 meeting. Both properties were annexed by the city legislatively through the Georgia General Assembly during its past session. These are the same rezonings that the properties had when they were part of unincorporated Gwinnett.
