Duluth May Change Alcohol Rules for Parsons Alley

A business owner makes a suggestion for the downtown area.

With an eye toward economic development for the downtown area, Duluth officials are considering a change to alcohol regulations for Parsons Alley.

City Council members Monday (Oct. 28) discussed at a work session a request by a downtown Duluth business owner to be able to serve alcohol in the alley, which is between West Lawrenceville Street and Highway 120.

"Our vision is to bring people to downtown Duluth," said Greg Lindquist, who owns The Best of Brews on Main Street.

Lindquist's idea is to construct an area in the alley that would become a permanent serving location. Such an area could accommodate such events as a football telecast.

Council members and Mayor Nancy Harris were receptive to the idea, but prefer that any change in the city's alcohol ordinance accommodate any business, not just Lindquist's.

City Attorney Steve Pereira said he will begin work on changes soon, as they would have to be voted on at a City Council meeting before they would take effect.
