Duluth Graduates Fourth L.E.A.D. Academy Class

Participants learn about city government and explore opportunities to become involved.

The City of Duluth announced it has graduated its fourth L.E.A.D. Academy in a ceremony at the Parc at Duluth. Participants were presented certificates and T-shirts by Mayor Nancy Harris.

L.E.A.D., which stands for Learn, Engage, Advance Duluth, offers a way for potential leaders to become knowledgeable about the essential functions, operations, services, and responsibilities of city government. Also, the leadership program provides an opportunity for citizens to casually interact with elected officials and city staff.

Class participants were presented information about important issues the city faces and were afforded an opportunity to ask questions to gain a better understanding of Duluth government and their role in local government. They were encouraged to become engaged in government operations, participate by serving on various boards and committees, and explore other opportunities in the community and in the city to become involved.

“I am so pleased with the caliber of people who showed interest in this program and have a commitment to the continuous improvement of our great city,” said Councilman Marsha Bomar, who initially had the idea of the city sponsoring a L.E.A.D. Academy. “The future is very bright with these new future leaders.” The academy was implemented and managed by city staff.

The L.E.A.D. Academy is a six-week program offered once a year in the fall. Participants met on Tuesdays starting Sept. 20 and ending with graduation Oct. 25. The sessions included Working for You – learn about the different city departments, How you can get involved – boards, commissions, authorities and other volunteer opportunities, Embracing our diversity – how do we engage our entire community, Try on a city hat – mock council meeting, Get to know your community organizations, and finally graduation.
