Duluth 'Gateway' To Get $1.2 Million Boost

Most of the money is available because of a state decision.

A Duluth intersection that is described as a "key gateway" into the city will be getting a boost of $1 million-plus, due to City Council action Monday (Nov. 11).

The Buford Highway-Pleasant Hill Interchange will be the recipient of funds that originally had been planned for the Hospital Connector project. The Georgia Department of Transportation removed the money, which was billboard settlement money, from the Hospital Connector project because it was overfunded, according to city officials.

Duluth officials had until the end of 2013 to select a project on a state route for new use of the money.

And they chose what Council Member Billy Jones called a "key gateway into the city."

"This is huge for us," Council Member Marsha Anderson Bomar said.

Work will include new lighting, landscaping, sidewalks, Wayfinding signage, and other beautification, according to city documents.

Also, this project will get a 20 percent match -- $200,000. Duluth officials will investigate the best source of funds, according to Planning Director James Riker.
