Western Gwinnett Bikeway Extension to be Built

Gwinnett County Commission awards construction contact for extension of Western Gwinnett Bikeway connecting Norcross, Berkeley Lake and Duluth.

Within the year, an extension of the Western Gwinnett Bikeway connecting Norcross, Berkeley Lake and Duluth is expected to be completed.

The Gwinnett County Commission awarded a construction contract Thursday (Jan. 3) to extend the 10-foot wide multi-purpose asphalt trail. The extension will add more than two miles along Peachtree Industrial Boulevard to the trail from its current end at Pleasant Hill Road north to Rogers Bridge Park in Duluth.

Besides connecting the communities, the extension will provide transportation options and improve pedestrian safety in the area.

Johnson Landscapes Inc. d/b/a Vertical Earth of Cumming was the lowest of four bidders for the project at $1.3 million. Federal funding will cover 80 percent of the construction costs while the 2009 SPLOST will fund the local portion shared by Gwinnett County and the city of Duluth. Construction should be finished this year, according to a press release issued by the county.

The project includes some roadway widening with curb and gutter, building retaining walls where needed to stay within the right-of-way, and upgrading a few existing trail sections along the route.
