Area Mayors to Support Public Transit Authority

Area mayors will soon be releasing a statement about their desire for a regional transportation authority, according to Randy Meacham, Managing Director of the Gwinnett Municipal Association. 

The mayors will not be endorsing a specific bill, but will be encouraging lawmakers to do something in this legislative session, Meacham anticipates. “This really, really is important stuff,” said Meacham. “I think that folks are ready to do it—and do it in the right way.”

Bucky Johnson, mayor of Norcross, serves two roles in the larger effort. He is chair of a Transportation Roundtable and also serving on an executive committee for the entire metro area, which is preparing a list of future potential projects. 

In August 2012, a 10-year, one-cent transportation sales tax will be up for a vote. DeKalb and Fulton counties have levied the one-cent tax.
