AP Reports Romney Winner of Iowa Caucus

Eight votes separate Romney and Rick Santorum, who came in second. Ron Paul was third.

The Associated Press reported that former Massachusetts governor Mitt Romney was declared the winner of the Iowa Caucus early Wednesday by just eight votes. Republican presidential candidate Romney is also favored to win the Jan. 10 New Hampshire Primary, according to the AP.

Former Pennsylvania senator Rick Santorum, who campaigned in all 99 Iowa counties, came in second in the Tuesday (Jan. 3) Iowa Caucus. Romney had 30,015 votes compared to 30,007 for Santorum.

More than 122,000 straw ballots were cast, a record for Iowa Republicans, the AP reported. Final returns showed Romney with 24.55 percent of the votes and Santorum with 24.54 percent. Texas Rep. Ron Paul was third with 21.5 percent. Former House Speaker Newt Gingrich came in fourth; Texas Gov. Rick Perry, fifth; and Minnesota Rep. Michelle Bachmann, a distant sixth.
