Police: Weapon Found at GGC Was Semi-Automatic Handgun

The gun had a loaded magazine, according to police. A Duluth man was arrested over the incident.

The weapon found at Georgia Gwinnett College recently that prompted the arrest of a Duluth man was a 9mm semi-automatic pistol. It was found in a residence hall with a loaded magazine, according to police.

According to the GGC Police incident report, which was obtained by Patch through an open records request, the suspect was signed into the building by a resident.

Duane Davon Dixon of a Club Place address in Duluth was arrested by GGC Police on Oct. 31 in connection with this incident. He was jailed on $5,700 bond on a charge of possessing a weapon on school property.

Gwinnett Detention Center records show that he was released on bond on Nov. 2.

GGC has said that the suspect was neither a student nor an employee.

According to the incident report, the officer responded to a  call on Oct. 31. He met with someone who advised the officer that a "suspicious person" had been "signed in multiple times on a daily basis."

The complainant said that he had observed a suite door ajar, and that no one was assigned to that suite. The person said he went into the suite and found suitcases and clothing.

After searching the bags for identification, the complainant told police he found a black handgun. He also found a wallet that contained a drivers license.

The weapon was lying on the bottom of the bag, with a magazine loaded with ammunition. The officer confirmed that the gun's magazine was loaded, although there was no ammunition in the chamber.

A check by police determined that the gun was not stolen, and that there were no warrants out for the drivers license holder.

While GGC police were obtaining a warrant for the gun owner's arrest, they were informed that the suspect was on his way to the residence hall. Officers met the suspect, and placed him under arrest.

During the arrest, Dixon told police that he understood that he shouldn't have had the gun in the residence hall, according to the incident report.

The gun was given over to Lawrenceville Police.

This information was obtained from Georgia Gwinnett College Police. It does not indicate a conviction. Questions should be addressed to duluth@patch.com.
