String of Car Break-Ins Reported at Hotel, Apartment Complex

Cars at the Hampton Inn and Gables at Sugarloaf apartments, both in unincorporated Duluth, were targeted.

Gwinnett County Police incident reports are filled with reasons why you need to lock the doors of your car and secure your valuables.

That’s especially true in areas where multiple vehicles are parked, like these two entering-auto examples from unincorporated Duluth:

--On Aug. 10, two residents at the Gables at Sugarloaf apartment complex on Woodiron Drive reported someone had stolen items from their parked cars.

In both cases, there were no signs of forced entry.

A woman said two GPS units, one iPod and a designer pair of sunglasses β€” total value of $950 β€” were stolen from her 1998 Oldsmobile Cutlass some time between 4 p.m. Aug. 9 and 6 a.m. Aug. 10.

A man told police that a $320 pair of sunglasses and a $60 bluetooth unit were missing from his 2003 Nissan 350Z. He said the items were taken sometime between 9:30 p.m. Aug. 9 and 6 a.m. Aug. 10.

--On Aug. 10 and 11, Gwinnett Police looked into three auto burglaries at the Hampton Inn on Pineland Road.

A man reported on Aug. 11 that his work truck, a 2001 Ford F-150, had been rummaged through by someone who had broken the passenger-side lock to gain entry.

Also on Aug. 11, a woman said someone broke though a passenger-side window on her rented 2012 Mitsubishi Eclipse, perhaps thinking an empty leather computer bag had a laptop in it (it didn't). The incident happened sometime between 5 p.m. Aug. 10 and 9 a.m. Aug. 11.

The previous day, a man told police that items valued at $250 were taken from his 2003 Chevrolet Impala while parked at the hotel. He told police he thought he had locked the doors, but there were no signs of forced entry.
