Stay Safe this Fourth of July
Firefighters offer tips on how to be safe around fireworks.
Many celebrations of Fourth of July involve fireworks, either at home or a professional show. The Gwinnett County Department of Fire and Emergency Service would prefer that the use of fireworks are left to professionals. However, for those that do decide to use fireworks on the 4th, here are some tips to keep in mind.
- Know what types of fireworks are legal. Sparklers, smoke balls, snakes, ground spinners , and fountains are consumer-type legal fireworks. If the label says "emits showers or sparks" , it is typically legal. Illegal items are anything that rises in the air such roman candles, sky rockets, and cherry bombs.
- Store fireworks in a cool, dry area.
- Keep a bucket of water, hose, or fire extinguisher close at hand.
- Keep a safe distance between the firework, people, building, cars, or any other obstruction. It should also be placed on level ground that is firm.
- Only light one firework at a time and soak the firework in a bucket of water after use.Β
- NEVER allow children to handle fireworks
Have a safe and fun Independence Day holiday.
