Roof Fire Damages Sweet Tomatoes Restaurant

Fire and smoke damage causes popular eatery to close for business

Gwinnett County firefighters put out a fire on the roof at the Sweet Tomatoes restaurant at 3505 Mall Boulevard near Gwinnett Place Mall in Duluth Monday morning (March 7).

The fire damage was contained to the roof with smoke damage in the kitchen and dining areas, according to Charles Wells, deputy chief of operations for Gwinnett County Fire/Emergency Services. The restaurant is closed due to the damages, Wells said.

Fire crews found moderate smoke and flames showing from the restaurant on arrival at 12:46 a.m., according to Wells. Firefighters forced entry and accessed the roof to locate and extinguish the fire, Wells reported. The fire was brought under control at 1:17 a.m., he said.

The fire originated in a small storage and sign area located on the roof, Wells said. It does not appear to be suspicious at this time, he said. No injuries were reported.Β 

A Gwinnett County police officer on routine patrol spotted the fire and reported it. Fire crews were dispatched to the scene at 12:42 a.m., Wells said.
