None of 11 Georgia Traffic Deaths Over July 4th Weekend in Gwinnett

The 11 traffic fatalities were reported in Georgia during the 102-hour period between 6 p.m. on July 3 and midnight on Sunday, July 7.

The Georgia State Patrol is reporting that traffic crashes over the 102-hour holiday travel period, which stretched from Wednesday evening to Sunday at midnight, resulted in 11 fatalities.

Troopers investigated three of the fatal crashes in Haralson, Jefferson, and Catoosa counties that involved four deaths, according to a news release.

Other agencies reporting traffic deaths during the holiday period were  Henry County Police, Atlanta Police, Fulton County Police, Carrollton Police, the Jones County Sheriff's Office, the Putnam County Sheriff's Office, and the Columbia County Sheriff's Office.

A major focus of increased patrols over the holiday weekend was Operation Zero Tolerance, a campaign aimed at removing impaired drivers from the roads. Statewide, troopers made over 16,600 traffic stops  and arrested 300 people on DUI charges. 

During the Fourth of July travel period in 2012, which only covered 30 hours, there were 2 fatalities reported, 151 accidents and 120 injuries. The Fourth of July is routinely one of the deadliest days for motorists, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
