Natural Gas Leak in Duluth Reported Repaired

Two southbound lanes of Buford Highway closed most of the day while traffic was diverted.

A natural gas leak reported about 11 a.m. Thursday in the 3000 block of Buford Highway between Howell Street and Ga. Hwy. 120 in Duluth was reported repaired about 3 p.m. Gwinnett firefighters responded to the scene at 10:42 a.m. and discovered the odor of natural gas and an active leak.

A contractor digging to install communications cable struck a service line near the roadway, according to Gwinnett Fire Capt. Tommy Rutledge.

Firefighters closed two southbound lanes of Buford Highway, and police diverted traffic around the leak. Occupants of a nearby business that was evacuated were allowed to return after the leak was fixed by Atlanta Gas Light, Rutledge reported. One turn lane remained blocked.

An emergency crew from Atlanta Gas Light had to dig at two separate locations to try and stop the leak. Firefighters continued to monitor gas readings in the area and deployed a hoseline on the ground for use if necessary until the leak was repaired, Rutledge said.

No injuries were reported.
